From en.wiktionary.org:
[Lunch]
** English
*** Etymology
Recorded since 1580 in the sense “piece, hunk”. The word [en] with the same meaning is presumably an extension on the pattern of [en] and [en]. But earliest found forms include [en] and [en], which are equivalent to [en], with the suffix [en] possibly later modified to imitate a French origin.
The sense “light meal” is first attested for _luncheon_ in 1652 and for _lunch_ in 1829, so in this sense the latter is probably a shortening of the former.
_Lunch_ is possibly a derivative of [en] (as [en] is from [en]. See [en] for more), or represents an alteration of [en], from [en] (see [en]) and altered by northern English dialect [en] (1590), which perhaps is from [en] or from [es].[1]
