*** Etymology
From a dialectal variant of [en], from [en], from [en], from [en]. [en]. Related to [en].
The _[OED]_ notes[1]: "The vowel of the modern _gloaming_ is anomalous, as Old English _glōmung_ should normally become _glooming_. The explanation is probably that the _ō_ was shortened in the compound _ǣfen-glommung_ (as the spelling seems to show was actually the case), and that from this compound there was evolved a new subject _glŏmung_, which by normal phonetic development became Middle English _glǭming_, modern English _gloaming_."
