*** Etymology
With dialectal _-ā-_ → _-ō-_ from northern [de], borrowed from [de]. The latter form could be a mere alteration of the rare masculine [gml], from [de], from [de], from [de] (which see for cognates); ultimately from [de].
However, the feminine may also go back to an unattested [osx] (with a short vowel), from [gem-pro] (or similar), related with [gem-pro] (which is from [de]). The evidence for this is [gmh], from [goh]. In Middle Low German and Middle Dutch, this feminine noun would have widely merged with the aforementioned [gml], [osx] per open-syllable lengthening.
