*** Etymology
From [de], [gmh] (“folk, people”, ca. 1200). Generally derived from [de], [fro]. However, since Middle High German consistently shows _-v-_, borrowing from Italian Gallo-Romance _povolo_ should also be considered. In any case from [de]. The form with _-b-_ shows a later, chiefly East Central German development and was spread by [Martin Luther] Bible. The umlaut is attested since the 15th century (perhaps after [de]).
