_POMADASYS_ is a genus of grunts native to the waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean and through the Indian Ocean to the Pacific coast of the Americas.<ref name=FishBase/> The name of this genus is a compound of _poma_ meaning "lid" or "covering" and _dasys_ meaning "rough", a reference to the serrated preopercle.<ref name = ETYFish>[ url = https://etyfish.org/lutjaniformes/ ]

** Systematics
_Pomadasys_ has been subject to some molecular studies which have resolved the genus as paraphyletic. To resolve this paraphyly the genera _Rhencus_ and _Rhonciscus_ were revived with the eastern Pacific species _P. maacrocanthus_ and _P. panamensis_ being placed in _Rhencus_ while _Rhonicus_ contains the eastern Pacific species _P. bayanus_ and the western Atlantic species _P. crocro_.<ref name = Parenti>[ author = Paolo Parenti ]
